Futures Learning

I now have a general idea of what futures learning is. At first, I thought they were just going to be lessons of playing games and having fun. I’m not denying the fact that it isn’t fun, in fact, it’s my favourite subject! But the activities we do have a lot more intellect behind what we’re doing and why we’re doing it.

If you were unaware, I take an elective in high school called futures learning. It is focused around the main fundamentals of the 4 C’s. This subject is a self-paced, free learning environment that helps us become more independent.

As this is a newly-created subject, the curriculum is very flexible, hence the abundance of games and fun within each lesson. In the second semester of the year, the learning becomes much more personalised, in which students make a project on whatever they may be passionate about. This drives students to become more independent and prepare themselves for their work lives ahead.

I was full of adrenaline, prepared to face the rest of the year. Finally somewhere where I can do what I love. The only thing was, my friends were planning to quit (they’re definitely not anymore), so I was ready to branch out to my new classmates. After an introduction, we played a game of ‘Salt & Pepper‘ and I basically ‘cheated’ and found out who I was by matching everybody else up before myself, finishing in basically five minutes. I met one girl, who was actually the only person in my class I didn’t know! We spent the rest of the lesson learning about the content and expectations for this year – Kayla Hill
